Campbell pulled her Fusion up behind Keith’s vehicle in the parking lot of a country store and bait shop beside Route 68. Keith got out and walked over to her driver’s side window.

“It’s only another mile or so,” he said. “Do you want to ride with me from here?”

She put the window up and turned off the ignition. Grabbing her phone, she slid it in one pocket, her keys in another. She hadn’t expected this, but it made sense. They’d be going off on a gravel camp road, and it would no doubt be easier and draw less attention if they went in one vehicle.

As soon as she had her seatbelt buckled, he pulled out. She took a quick look over her shoulder. The back seat held a lightweight jacket, a clipboard, and a Bible. It was Sunday. She’d meant to visit her dad’s church, but when Nick called suggesting they meet to go over all their notes, she’d gone to the office instead. She watched Keith’s sober profile for a few seconds but said nothing.

A few hundred yards past the store, he nodded toward a dirt road they were passing. “My folks have a cottage down there.”

“Really? That’s so cool.” She immediately felt like a teenager, except that her slang was definitely out of date.

“Yeah, it’s a nice location on a point. They’ve had it winterized. When I was a kid it was for summers only.”

“So they live there all the time now?”

“Yeah. Sold me the old house in town at a rock-bottom price. It’s nothing fancy, but it gives me a base.”

Campbell nodded, thinking of her father’s own modest two-bedroom ranch. Keith turned off the pavement, and they plunged into a wooded lane. Oaks and hickories hovered over the narrow road. A couple of branches wended off the main drive, and soon she could see the sparkle of water beyond the foliage.

The Tennessee River had been widened here a half century or more ago. The Tennessee Valley Authority had built dams at the top of the new Kentucky Lake, in the town called Grand River. The same was true of the Cumberland River, a few miles away. Both elongated lakes enclosed the Land Between the Lakes.

Campbell was always sad when she thought about the people—and entire towns—who’d been moved out of the area when the project was begun. But overall, she supposed it was good for Kentucky and the surrounding states. It not only increased the production of electric power, but it eased barge transportation and brought many tourists to the area for camping, boating, fishing, and hiking.

“His cottage is right up there.” Keith nodded ahead, and she leaned forward to see between the trees. “I touched base with the Realtor. She says he’s not staying at the farmhouse anymore, and he’s cleared everything out that he wants to keep. If he’s not out here, he’s probably gone back to Tennessee.”

“Is that where he lives now?”

“Yes, over near Knoxville.”

Soon he stopped in front of a rustic, board-sided building with a no-frills back entry.
